The first thing that’s striking about Windows 7 beta 1 is how similar it is to the M3 builds that I’ve been using since October. In fact, put builds 6801 and 7000 beta 1 side-by-side and you might be hard pressed to spot the difference (especially if you activated the Blue Badge features). This means that if you’ve been following Windows 7 builds then when you get your hands on the beta you’ll be pretty familiar with the beta. The flip-side is that I’ve got fewer new things to show you!

 
It’s unusual not to be faced with heaps of new features with each build - it’s almost as though Microsoft had a plan for Windows 7 right from the start, baked these features into the early M3 build and have since been working on refining these features. This is an interesting approach that seems to have resulted in the best beta build of an OS from Microsoft that I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a LOT of beta builds!). Wow!
Installation
Installing Windows 7 beta 1 is faster and simpler than installing Windows Vista or Windows XP on a system.
There are fewer steps to work through, the installation is overall much faster than for earlier Microsoft operating systems (I can get Windows 7 onto most systems in about 25 minutes, on a powerful system the install process will take less than 20 minutes), and there are fewer obstacles between the user and the OS once it’s installed (for example, gone is that annoying post-install performance test).
 
Revamped desktop
On meeting Windows 7 for the first time the first thing that you’ll notice is the revamped desktop. Let’s take a quick look at some of the features:
 
  • New taskbar
    Oddly enough, the first thing that you’re likely to notice about Windows 7 is also the bit that I like the least. The new revamped taskbar is visually very interesting (and certainly a lot easier to use at higher screen resolutions that the Vista or XP taskbar), but it tries to do too much and as such comes across as kludgey and counter-intuitive. One failure is that it’s hard to tell the difference between apps that are running and shortcuts that have been pinned to the taskbar. It also incorporates the new Jump Lists feature which acts as a context-sensitive menu for applications. Problem is that there’s very little rhyme or reason to what to expect from Jump Lists, making them awkward to use in the real world.
  • Aero Snap
    Aero Snap is a simple little feature that I find myself using all the time. This is a gestures driven method of organizing Windows. Drag a window to the top of the screen and the app is maximized. Drag it to the side and you get it to tile to one half of the screen. Drag the app away from the top of the screen to restore it. It’s a very handy feature indeed, especially for people who work with multiple applications.
  • Aero Peek
    Ever wanted to see what was on your desktop without minimizing all your applications? Aero Peek is the feature for you. Mouse over the small area on the right-hand side of the taskbar and you get a glimpse of what’s on your desktop, allowing you to see shortcuts and gadgets. Aero Peek is of limited usefulness though since you can’t interact with anything on the desktop because as soon as you move the mouse off the Peek spot the applications all return.
  • Personalizations
    If you like to customize your Windows experience then you’ll appreciate some of these changes. Not only does Windows 7 come with several ready-made themes that include specific background images, colors, sounds and screensavers, there are also themes that make use of a desktop slideshow to continually change the desktop image.
Applications
Windows 7 has a far fewer applications to look at than XP and Vista. Gone are applications such as Windows Mail, Windows Messenger, Movie Maker and so on. Anyone wanting apps of this sort will need to download then via Windows Live Essentials.

 
Paint and Wordpad now incorporate the Ribbon UI found in Microsoft Office and seem to have received a little TLC by Microsoft programmers.
Internet Explorer 8 will be the browser that Microsoft wants you to use with Windows 7. It’s far better than earlier incarnations of IE but still falls short when compared to other browsers.
Windows Media Player is also vastly improved, but as with IE, you’ll either use it or have a third-party app that you use instead.
Media Center sees a few new tweaks, most noticeably a “Getting Started” feature aimed at new users.
Hardware and software compatibility
Microsoft does seem to have kept to its word when it claimed that what worked for Vista should work for Windows 7. I have run across some software issues (which I believe are related to UAC - User Account Control - changes in Windows 7) but since developers haven’t yet seen a beta these sorts of issues are to be expected and I’m sure most will be fixed within weeks of beta 1 being officially released.

 
I’ve had no noteworthy issues relating to hardware, although drivers that officially support Windows 7 are still a while off so I’ve been sticking with Microsoft drivers. I expect hardware vendors to start getting Windows 7 drivers out soon after the official release of Windows 7.
Microsoft demoed some cool stuff at PDC relating to Device Stage, but I’ve not yet come across anything that kicks it into life.

f you do run into problems with Windows 7 then you get access to the new Troubleshooter that attempts to diagnose and fix problems. It’s not perfect, but it’s a darn sight better than any troubleshooter previously shipped with Windows.
Closing thoughts
I like Windows 7, a lot. Microsoft seems to have put a lot of effort into developing a core operating system that is free from the pointless frills of the likes of XP and Vista. The OS is solid and fast and based on what I’ve seen so far I’d have no problems in rolling out beta 1 and using it daily.
I am concerned about the new taskbar. I hope that Microsoft is receiving constructive feedback on this feature and working to improve it for the release candidate version of Windows 7. The new taskbar isn’t a deal-breaker for me, but I do feel that it’s the least refined part of Windows 7.
I can’t wait until the official release of Windows 7 beta 1 so that you folks out there can tell me what you think of it.

Personas for Firefox is a extension that adds lightweight theming to your browser. It's an experiment in personalizing. You can download it or read on for more information. Personas builds upon the ideas that:
  • themes today are too hard to find, install and use
  • graphic designers should be able to style the browser without having to code
  • browsers can be more than just desktop software, they can include online components
  • people just want their computer to be a little more fun and personal
We've just begun exploring the possible benefits of an online component to deliver a better browser experience. There much to explore in this regard; Personas is a simple example. Persona selector is dynamically loaded and populated from a JSON feed and all designs are loaded via URLs to remote resources. All changes to the browser chrome are applied instantly, with no need to restart.

Don’t underestimate the diminutive camera in your phone. It can capture unbelievable jumbo size images.

 
If we said we shot a 20 megapixel image with a camera phone, you’d think we were kidding. Yes, it’s impossible to capture an image that large with a phone in a single shot, but it’s possible to do it with multiple shots. If you’re into digital photography you might have probably guessed what we’re going to talk about in this hands-on session—it’s about capturing panoramas.
Shooting a panorama involves shooting segments of a large scene in a sequence and then stitching them together using an image stitching utility to get a single large image. While this technique is ideal for capturing landscapes and ultra-wide scenes that are impossible to capture in a single shot, you can even capture group photos with great details.
No doubt digital cameras deliver best results; we headed out with a camera phone and shot a picturesque landscape. And the results were astonishing! Here’s how we went about it.
Step 1: Get Autostitch
Autostitch can be downloaded for free from www.autostitch.net as a Zip archive (autostitch.zip). Extract the contents to a new folder on your hard drive. The software is a mere 1.4 MB in size after extraction. You can create a shortcut to the executable file on your Desktop or ‘Start menu | Programs’ for easy access.
Step 2: Shooting technique
Autostitch is the most easy-to-use and intelligent image stitching software  that we have got our hands on so far. It can automatically arrange and align the images captured in series and deliver seamless results. Autostitch is capable of handling a series of images captured in a variety of sequences, the number of pictures that Autostitch can handle is virtually limitless. The most commonly used sequence is the horizontal sequence in which the images of the scene are captured along the horizontal axis. This sequence is ideal for capturing scenes such as landscapes that are wide and impossible to capture in a single shot. You can even capture a vertical panorama, for instance a shot of a tall building, by capturing the series of images vertically starting from the top or bottom of the building. Autostitch can also handle sequences of images taken along a wavy path as shown in the image below. This is the most complex sequence and is ideal for shooting very large scenes.
While stitching the images, the image stitching software detects the edge of the next image which overlaps the edge of the current image and aligns the images accordingly. If there are no overlapping edges, the software won’t know how to align the images. So the basic rule is to make sure that around one-sixth of the current frame overlaps the next frame.
Step 3: Go out and shoot!
Start with this little exercise—go out with your phone and shoot a horizontal panorama. Shoot whatever you like, perhaps a view from your balcony or vehicles lined up at a traffic signal. You can capture a great panorama from the terrace of a tall apartment. If you’re hanging out with a group of friends, take a group shot, but not a single shot from a distance. Get closer and capture all the subjects in a series of shots, horizontally. Don’t forget the overlapping rule! If you’re too lazy to go out, you can experiment with the sample images that come included in the Zip archive. Carefully note the overlapping regions in the samples.
  
Step 4: Fire up Autostitch
Transfer the series of images you just shot to your PC in a new folder and then run Autostitch. Go to Edit and choose Option which is the only item listed in the menu. By default Autostitch scales the resultant panorama to 10 percent of its original size. Set the value to 100 percent to avoid resizing. If you have taken the images using the vertical frame (portrait orientation) you can set the option to rotate the images clockwise or anticlockwise. Finally set the JPEG quality to 100 to get the best image quality. Setting the quality to lower values will degrade the image quality. Don’t experiment with the other options as Autostitch does a neat job with the default settings. Click ‘OK’ to proceed.
Step 5: Time to stitch
After changing the options go to the File menu and click ‘Open’. Navigate to the folder where you transferred all the images from your phone. Select all the files and click on the ‘Open’ button to start the stitching process. This process is CPU intensive and you’ll have to wait patiently until the final image is displayed on your screen. The final result is saved as pano.jpg in the folder containing the images you transferred from your phone.
Step 6: Final touches
The final image will not be a perfect rectangle and may have black patches along some of the borders and corners. You can use IrfanView or Photoshop to crop the panorama and eliminate the redundant areas, or you can leave the image the way it is, if it looks artistic to you. Looks good? Bet it does!
 


From its annual All Hands Meeting in Tokyo this week, the Bluetooth SIG formally adopted Bluetooth Core Specification Version 3.0 High Speed (HS), or Bluetooth 3.0. This latest iteration of the popular short-range wireless technology fulfills the consumers’ need for speed while providing the same wireless Bluetooth experience – only faster. Manufacturers of consumer electronics and home entertainment devices can now build their products to send large amounts of video, music and photos between devices wirelessly at higher speeds.

 
Bluetooth 3.0 gets its speed from the 802.11 radio protocol. The inclusion of the 802.11 Protocol Adaptation Layer (PAL) provides increased throughput of data transfers at the approximate rate of 24 Mbps. In addition, mobile devices including Bluetooth 3.0 will realize increased power savings due to enhanced power control built in.

"Like Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights, this latest version was 'born to go fast,' said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG." Utilizing the 802.11 radio was a natural choice as it provides efficiencies for both our members and consumers – members get more function out of the two radios they are already including in devices, and consumers with Bluetooth v3.0 HS products will get faster exchange of information without changing how they connect. We are excited to expand the possibilities of the PAN.”

 This newest version of Bluetooth technology builds on the inherent qualities of the current 2.1 EDR version, including Simple Secure Pairing and built-in, automatic security. And as with all versions of the Bluetooth specification, Bluetooth 3.0 HS provides developers, manufacturers and consumers with the benefit of backwards compatibility, enabling both the expansion and enhancement of this technology with every new specification release. Once products reach the market, the easiest way for consumers to learn which devices are compatible with other Bluetooth enabled devices is to visit the Bluetooth Gadget Guide.

Some applications consumers will experience include:
  • Wirelessly bulk synchronize music libraries between PC and music player or phone
  • Bulk download photos to a printer or PC
  • end video files from camera or phone to computer or television
The Bluetooth SIG’s formal adoption of the specification is only the first step in the product lifecycle. News out today from wireless chip manufacturers and Bluetooth SIG member companies Atheros, Broadcom, CSR, and Marvell shows the second step – getting silicon solutions to device manufacturers – is already underway. End products for consumers are expected to be in the market in 9 to 12 months.

Let’s face it we’re all pulling out our hair in anticipation of the next generation iPhone. From what it’s going to look like to what features it’ll carry to the kind of technology it’ll employ. It’s speculation all the way with a little imagination thrown in to spice things up. We’ve already heard rumors that the new handset just might incorporate a 3.2 megapixel camera into its arsenal of features, but we don’t have any information of its focus i.e. whether it’ll be fixed or autofocus.

 
The latest reports making the rounds are of the impression that there could most likely be two new handsets making their debut sometime this year. We’ve been hearing of a possible iPhone Nano as well. Other rumours also talk to the latest OS, 3.0 featuring video recording and having a digital compass as well as a Voice Control function for voice commands.

There’s now talk of the new handset, or handsets being launched sometime in June or July of 2009, but as of now none of this is confirmed so till it is we'll just have to sit on these darn pins and needles. Stay Tuned.
